that moment in high school when you say something you’ve said before but its given a new (or truer) meaning.
i remember calling ‘conflict between two gangs’: a gang bang. i was later informed this is not what it means… not at all.
but then also, there’s that moment that changes not just a meaning but the the word or phrase, but its use too.
i remember in primary school some jackass thought it would be funny to spread that the word: ‘rubber’ means ‘condom’. now, back in primary school, adult things like that was ‘icky’ or a basis for humiliation (for whatever reason). (socialization in process, see?). from that day onwards, it created such a strong affiliation that ‘rubber’ meant ‘condom’ and that saying ‘rubber’ meant something worthy of humiliation. it changed the meaning of the word and its use, well, forever. i don’t say ‘rubber’ to refer to the item which rubs pencil off a paper, nor do i refer a condom to a ‘rubber’ (which sows the socilisation only refers to the ‘rubber’).
i have thenceforth used ‘eraser’: i ‘erase’. i have an ‘eraser’.
language is a funny thing, but it is not apart from socialization either.
